Vietnamese parents spend up to $39,000 on US study consultancy services

Fees for these services can vary significantly, with some parents spending as much as VND1 billion (US$39,000), while the average cost typically falls between VND10 million and VND100 million.

The appeal of these consultancy services stems from the challenges of the U.S. education system, which includes thousands of universities and a highly detailed application process. For many, professional help offers a way to streamline the procedure and improve their child’s chances of admission to top universities.

Nguyen Mai, a parent from Hanoi, shared her experience seeking advice for her daughter’s U.S. college application. Last year, she was presented with packages priced at $5,000, $10,000, and $30,000 by a well-known consultancy company.

After consulting with friends, she opted for the $10,000 package, which promised support in applying to about 20 universities. These universities were mostly ranked within the top 30-100 in the U.S.

“I didn’t choose the $5,000 package because it only offered basic guidance, and my daughter would have to write the essays and complete the paperwork herself,” Mai explained.

Similarly, another parent from Hanoi, Thanh, faced a $7,000 quote from an English and SAT training center, with only 10 days left before the application deadline.

Believing that the rate was too high, she opted for an independent consultant who charged VND20 million ($780). Thanh was assisted in applying to three schools in the top 100, paying a deposit of VND15 million, with the balance due upon receiving acceptance.

In Ho Chi Minh City, a local study consultancy center director explained that consultancy fees are highly variable. Fees for students applying to community colleges start around VND10 million, while applications to top universities, including Ivy League schools, can cost significantly more. These higher costs are often associated with longer preparation timelines, sometimes starting as early as 8th grade, and the need for additional activities such as scientific research and international competitions.

“For families aiming for top-tier schools, the fees can reach up to VND100 million, which covers applications to 10 schools,” the director added.

Phoebe Tran, Director of Crimson Education Vietnam, shared that their fees range from $15,000 to $20,000, offering a comprehensive suite of services. These include personalized application strategies, tutoring, extracurricular activity guidance, essay writing, interview preparation, scientific research support, internship programs, and international exam coaching.

“Our service isn’t limited by the number of applications or the prestige of schools, but is tailored to meet the family’s specific goals,” Tran said. “The service aims to strike a balance between highly competitive institutions and safer choices.”

Internationally, U.S. consultancy fees also vary widely. According to a 2018 survey by the Independent Educational Consultants Association (IECA), the average rate for consultants is about $250 per hour, with comprehensive packages ranging from $4,000 to $10,000.

However, some experts believe that not all students need a consultant. For those who lack the financial means, handling the application process independently is still an option. By researching schools, developing a well-structured plan, and using the Common App platform, students can navigate the process on their own.

The U.S. university application cycle is split into two main periods: early admission (with deadlines around Nov. 15) and regular decision (with deadlines in January). While consultancy services are popular, many students are still successfully applying without professional help, provided they are well-prepared and organized.

Vietmam sends a large number of students to the U.S.

Over 1.1 million international students from over 200 countries and territories came to the U.S. during the 2023-2024 school year, according to an Open Doors report issued by the Institute of International Education (IIE).

The number of Vietnamese students was at 22,066 people, placing them as the 6th-most populated international student community in the U.S.
